Bristol Airport

The 3-Tonne Mobile Loading Bay Solution

Summary

Unico3000

Low Profile Scissor Lift Platform

A robust loading bay solution, the Unico3000 scissor lift platform, was installed at Bristol Airport to manage critical load transfer operations.
The airport required a flexible, high-capacity solution that did not require a pit. The Unico3000’s low-profile 190mm lowered height met this need as a transportable, free-standing unit.
The platform offers a 3000 Kg capacity (EDL) and can raise loads to 1600mm, compatible with both lorry beds and existing loading docks.
The unit features a cladded enclosure, anti-slip flooring, and advanced safety systems, including twin telescopic hydraulic cylinders with rupture (hose break) valves for stability and stopping.

Introduction

Operational efficiency and safety are paramount in a major transport hub. Bristol Airport required a fully developed, versatile solution to streamline the process of load transfer within its ground support and logistics operations. This need was met by the installation of the Unico3000—a specialist, free-standing scissor lift platform.

Problem

Many conventional scissor lift loading bay solutions require civil engineering works to create a deep pit for the platform to recess into when lowered. In existing facilities like the one at Bristol Airport, digging a new pit can be costly, time-consuming, and architecturally disruptive. The core problem was securing a high-capacity, heavy-duty load transfer system that could function seamlessly at both ground level and lorry-bed height without the need for permanent, foundational builders’ work or a fixed pit installation.

Solution

The Unico3000 was the perfect solution due to its extra low profile, lowered height of only 190mm. This feature allows the scissor lift platform to be free-standing and mobile, eliminating the requirement for a costly, permanent pit. Its operational versatility is highlighted by its travel range, with a raised height of 1600mm specifically engineered to be compatible with standard lorry beds and existing dock levels. The lift’s operational strength is anchored by its 3000 Kg EDL (Equivalent Design Load) capacity. Safety and usability were addressed through a cladded enclosure with an ergonomic grab bar, press-to-travel control station, and anti-slip flooring.

Results

The installation of the Unico3000 at Bristol Airport resulted in a fully optimised and secure loading bay environment. Enhanced safety is guaranteed by the dual cylinder system, which is fitted with hose break valves to prevent rapid descent in the event of a hose failure, along with dust wipers and armoured hoses for long-term reliability in a demanding environment.

The inclusion of lifting eyes means the Unico3000 can be easily transported and deployed across different workstations as the airport’s logistical needs evolve, representing a highly adaptable long-term asset.
