Introduction
Edmolift works with many specialist set and stage building companies for TV, film, theatre and concerts, providing solutions to elevate musicians, presenters, and staging. Scissor lift platforms are often the ideal choice, as the complete lifting mechanism is below the platform, eliminating the need for overhead lifting gear that would otherwise be in full view of an audience or camera.
Problem
The set designers for BBC1’s ‘The Wheel’ made contact requiring a lift for this new Saturday night celebrity game show. It had to meet several crucial criteria for a demanding broadcast environment: the lift had to be exceptionally stable and have smooth operation throughout its lift travel. Furthermore, it also needed to be 100% reliable, as the show was recorded live with back-to-back episodes throughout a long filming day, making operational failure highly disruptive and costly.
Solution
A TMD1500 double vertical model was selected by the Edmolift team to provide the necessary stability and precision. To meet the requirements of strict timing imposed by live recording, the model was fitted with a remote powerpack that included a higher-speed motor and pump. The remote powerpack also incorporated emergency lowering capabilities. This precise system is used to raise seated contestants through the centre of a large rotating stage set, fulfilling the unique requirements of the production.
Results
The TMD1500 double vertical model successfully provides the required stable, smooth, and fast elevation system for production. The lift solution contributes to the seamless operation of this popular primetime show that is now successfully running in its sixth season, proving the reliability and fitness-for-purpose of the custom-specified Edmolift system.
