Introduction
Edmolift introduced an innovative new bin and refuse storage system designed to solve a perennial urban and residential problem: the unsightly nature of necessary wheelie bins. Planners, architects, developers, and homeowners are quickly recognising the many advantages of discreetly concealing these bins, starting with the immediate improvement in the visual environment.
Problem
The presence of unsightly wheelie bins at ground level leads to several issues beyond aesthetics. They are targets for littering and vandalism, often emit foul odours, and occupy valuable ground space that could otherwise be used for parking or amenity areas, a significant drawback in high-value urban areas like Kensington.
Solution
The solution is an innovative hydraulic lift system that stores the bins below ground. The entire bin store is housed in a perforated sheet-clad steel enclosure, complete with safety edges to prevent trapping injuries as the bins descend. The system is operated simply by a push button and takes just a few seconds to raise and descend for rubbish disposal and bin collection. The roof of the bin enclosure is recessed and can be finished to match the surrounding ground area—using materials like stone, slabs, or Astro-turf—so that when lowered, the entire unit is virtually undetectable.
Results
The underground bin storage system provides numerous measurable benefits. The visual environment is instantly improved, while the system leads to a measurable reduction in littering and vandalism. The cool, subterranean temperatures also minimise foul odours year-round. Most importantly, it creates an increase in usable ground-level space, allowing a car to be parked or a patio to be laid directly over the stored bins. Various sizes are available, ranging from units for two or three residential wheelie bins to larger units designed for apartment buildings and commercial use.
